Blue

A commissioned painting. It is a rather rare occasion when a client wants not a specific scene, but a color style. The more refreshing such occasions are.

In this case, the departure point was the Cat Piano independent animated short, with its blue color scheme. I felt its anemic blue-and-white was not right for a painting, and suggested yellow instead. The client suggested a cheetah (he likes cheetahs) and I made its “hook” feline head a minor compositional center. The rest pretty much grew organically, out of a tiny color thumbnail the size of a matchbox. It is almost abstract.
